Crickhowell Castle

The first castle on this site was a motte and bailey. In 1272 a stone castle was built by Sir Grimbald Pauncefote. It was refortified in the 15th century by Sir John Pauncefote but Owain Glyndwr's forces left it in ruins. By the mid 16th cenury it was uninhabitable and most of the stone was removed for building the town of Crickhowell. |
